WHAT WE EXPECT FROM ENGAGE 100 EXPERIENCES

The Engage 100 initiative is designed to connect, engage, and challenge students during their first semester at FSU. Approved experiences should help students pave the way to success in college. This may include helping students acclimate to university life, explore their interests, develop plans for academic and co-curricular involvement, and join a community of learners.

  • Courses must be small, mentor-guided group experiences.
  • Peer mentoring must be integrated into the course.
  • Courses should be centered on a particular topic, discipline, or area of interest. They may be tied to curricular or co-curricular programs.
  • Engage 100 experiences must be offered as a 0- or 1- credit hour course. Units may request to use IDS1107: The Florida State Experience with a special topic listed if they do not already have a course number.
  • All Engage 100 experiences must be reviewed and approved by our faculty committee.

WHAT SHOULD STUDENTS LEARN THROUGH ENGAGE 100?

Engage 100 courses must focus on at least three of the five Engage 100 student learning objectives. Course content and assignments should align with the selected objectives.

  • Students will know where to find engagement activities well beyond their first term of enrollment and intentionally select engagement activities that aligns with their interests
  • Students will join a formal community and form meaningful peer relationships
  • Students will gain skills to find new communities as their identities develop
  • Students will develop personal, social, and professional awareness
  • Students will be able to assess how their engagement activity aligns with their academic and personal goals

An Engage 100 experience ideally culminates with a student-developed engagement plan focused on future engagement and experiential learning opportunities aligned with their personal and professional goals.

WHEN SHOULD THE COURSE BE OFFERED?

Engage 100 courses can be offered during the Summer B, Fall, and Spring terms.

WHAT IS THE DURATION OF THE EXPERIENCE?

Engage 100 experiences should be one term or one summer session long to encourage deep engagement with the course topic and relationship-building with peers. There must be consistent class meetings during the semester with a minimum of 15 contact hours. It is encouraged to meet a minimum of once per week during the term, with a minimum of 10 formal class meetings.

WHAT SIZE SHOULD THE COURSE BE?

The optimum ratio is 19:1 for each course section; however, all prospective Engage 100 activities go through a review/approval process, so smaller or larger groups may be approved.

HOW ARE PEER MENTORS INTEGRATED INTO THE EXPERIENCE?

Peer mentors are an important part of the Engage 100 experience. It is up to the sponsoring department/program to decide how to best integrate peer mentoring into their course. Often peer mentors lead small group discussions/activities, participate on panels, and conduct individual meetings with enrolled students.

  • Peer mentors must be provided a formalized training that demonstrates measurable outcomes.
  • Peer mentors may facilitate course sections as undergraduate TAs if they successfully complete a university-approved training.
  • Peer led activities must have faculty/staff oversight, which may include formal class observations.
  • Funding is available to compensate peer mentors for their time and contributions.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF FACULTY/STAFF?

Each Engage 100 must have a faculty or staff liaison who is responsible for oversight of the experience and peer mentors. A faculty or staff member must be the Instructor of Record and meet the university’s policy on instructor credentialing for undergraduate courses. This generally means the IOR must have at least a master’s degree in a discipline related to the course content.

Peer mentors may lead course sections as undergraduate TAs if they receive appropriate, approved training. In this case, the IOR is responsible for conducting formal class observations. We are happy to provide materials for observations.

To be an approved campus partner, a memo of agreement must be signed (to align with legal and accreditation issues).

WHAT IF WE DON’T HAVE A COURSE NUMBER? WHAT IF OUR PROGRAM ISN’T HOUSED IN AN ACADEMIC UNIT?

Engage 100 experiences must be offered as a 0- or 1- credit hour course. Units may request to use IDS1107: The Florida State Experience with a special topic listed if they do not already have a course number.

If you do not already have an approved course number, you may use the sample syllabus below to shape your syllabus to fit into our expectations for IDS1107. Course objectives, assignments, and grading (S/U) must remain the same. However, the focus of these items and your weekly course outline can be adjusted to fit the specific topic for your experience. HOW CAN I GET HELP DESIGNING AN ENGAGE 100?

We know great programs and courses exist at FSU that would be strong candidates for Engage 100. We are happy to help you make tweaks to meet each of the Engage 100 requirements or to design an experience from scratch.

If you have any questions or would like to set up a meeting, please contact Danielle Porter at danielle.lewis@fsu.edu or Dr. Allison Peters at abpeters@fsu.edu.
