The purpose of this course is to allow students majoring in an Earth sciences discipline to start creating a community of fellow students within the EOAS department. In this course we will explore resources available to you as an FSU student, develop critical thinking skills, and examine hot topics in the field of research. An additional element of this class is that students are going to help design the course by choosing topics to focus for a given week’s class period. This “choose your own adventure” is meant to give power to the students in allowing them to pick topics they are interested in learning or discussing. As a result this will be a highly interactive class with lots of discussion, student demonstrations, and group activities. This engagement program specializes in working with first year college students to promote retention and academic success in the freshmen year and beyond. Examples of possible topics the class may choose: Finding resources both scholarly and non-scholarly Using AI tools in the classroom Data visualization tools (e.g. GIS software, Excel, Tableau Public, etc.) Academic Publishing Citation Management Procrastination Imposter Syndrome Research Data life cycle Reading Academic Articles Suggested topics from students are always appreciated.

This course invites first-year students to experience the many opportunities Florida State University has to offer and chart their own course to a successful college experience. Students will explore their own identities and values, engage with campus resources, and apply college success strategies to effectively navigate their transition to FSU. Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

• Describe the unique history, traditions, and values of Florida State University.
• Identify appropriate campus resources and involvement opportunities to aid in their transition to college.
• Implement effective time management and study strategies in order to achieve their academic and personal goals.
• Recognize the impact of their social identities in their life and campus community.
• Create their own curricular and co-curricular collegiate success plan.

Students participating in this course will learn about how to take advantage of the many academic engagement and support services FSU offers through in-class and out-of-classroom learning experiences. They will explore their own purpose, learn about themselves, and create plans to make the most of their time in college. This class will help students learn to interact with instructors, staff, and fellow students in ways which support their goals and the values of the FSU community.

Get involved with Sustainable Campus as we discuss practical ways to create a more sustainable society and deconstruct sustainability trends to dispel common sustainability myths.

The Future Innovators section of the Florida State Experience specializes in working with first-time in college students to promote academic success in your freshman year and beyond. This section will specifically introduce you to programs, services and resources here at FSU to assist you in engaging in innovative research, events and entrepreneurship. In addition, within this section you will plot a course of action (Game Plan) to take advantage of these resources throughout your time here at Florida State University. The resources and programs you will engage with will educate you about activities during and beyond your first semester. The meeting schedule will represent a wide range of potential student interests from technology-based activities to international programs. In the first week of the course, you will complete a questionnaire so that there will be a better understanding of your interests in research and general innovation. This will help to tailor the semester activities to the needs and interests of the class.

Future Innovators X:

The Future Innovators X section will focus on skill development and technological exploration. Throughout the semester, students will dive into the dynamic world of innovative technologies, including 3D printing, immersive media, and app development. You will engage in hands-on learning experiences aimed at introducing these cutting-edge tools and techniques. You will be introduced to impactful individuals, programs, and resources within FSU's vibrant ecosystem, all geared towards igniting your passion for innovation and problem solving. We will explore a diverse range of student interests, from coding and prototyping to launching your own entrepreneurial ventures. Each class session will be a dynamic blend of interactive workshops, guest visitors, and hands-on experiences, providing you with ample opportunities to experiment, create, and innovate. This section of IDS1107 is under the Topic Future Innovators X. 

This program is designed for students registered with the Office of Accessibility Services (OAS). Students will discuss utilizing accommodations, understanding personal strengths and challenges, working with faculty members, preparing for internships and future employment, campus resources, and skills development for successful academic and social integration into the university.

Through this course, students will identify and reassess their own prior service experiences, connect with the local community in a variety of ways that foster new perspectives and reflect on how identities, skills and goals empower them as leaders in their service journey.

Have you ever wanted to create your own tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG)? Do you enjoy roleplaying and want to learn more about the history and value of this activity? Are you interested in finding other like-minded students on campus? Welcome to "Tabletop Roleplaying Game Design: Crafting Worlds and Narratives," an immersive and hands-on course that invites you to delve into the captivating realm of TTRPG design! 

This introductory course is designed for creative minds who are passionate about storytelling, game mechanics, and collaborative world-building. No prior experience is necessary, and all levels of experience are welcomed. In this dynamic and interactive class, students will be assigned small groups and embark on a journey to conceptualize, develop, and bring to life their own unique TTRPG as it relates to their experiences here at FSU. The course aims to provide a comprehensive albeit introductory understanding of the key elements that contribute to a successful TTRPG experience. Additionally, students will explore opportunities to interact with like-minded individuals within the FSU community and connect their love of gaming to their educational and professional goals.

Students with an interest in developing culturally relevant service leadership skills, regardless of the previous experiences in service, will explore the many elements that support meaningful community engagement. Students will work with mentors connected to service leadership programs in the Center for Leadership & Social Change and will be given opportunities to apply skill sets developed within the course.

This course invites residential students new to FSU’s campus to explore strategies for success in the areas of respect, wellness, scholarship, and connection. Through group discussion, workshops, and meaningful experiences, students will formulate personal wellness goals, develop social and campus connections, understand their personal impact on community, enhance their academics through building better study skills, and recognize the influence of social identities and their role in communities.

This course is designed to help students build their skills in working one-on-one with others in a variety of contexts, providing them with experience that will aid them in virtually any major or career path. Students will learn effective strategies for helping others (and themselves) learn, working through conflict and disagreement, aiding people in different stages of distress, working with clients, supervising others as a teacher or employer, and collaborating with others. Students will develop their emotional intelligence, ability to handle conflicts, customer service aptitude, and other essential skills for improving their educational and career capabilities. Students in this class can expect to attend class once weekly, use Canvas to access course materials, and be ready to participate in classroom activities and have open discussion about each week's topic. A final project and presentation that connects your own goals with the concepts of the class and identifies relevant campus resources and activities will be due at the end of the semester.
