CARE QUEST Scholars - SLS1131

The QUEST Scholars Program of FSU’s Center for Academic Retention & Enhancement (CARE) is designed to invest in students for their success at FSU and beyond. Living Learning Community (LLC)

If you are accepted into an Living-Learning Community (LLC), where students with a shared interest live in the same residence hall, you will also take a few classes together and find friends and mentors for life. Some LLCs are designed for students in any major; others are limited by major or career field. Each LLC has a required colloquium course which meets the Engage 100 requirement too. To learn more, visit llc.fsu.edu. Each LLC requires enrollment in a colloquium course, so course codes vary. See the LLC appendix in "It's All Academic".

Your Transition to College: From Surviving to Thriving! – IDS1107 

This course is designed with one objective in mind: your successful navigation through potentially bumpy roads, unexpected roadblocks, and safe detours in transition to your college lifestyle, relationships, academics, and campus home. Within this 6-week course we’ll experience personal reflection and campus-focused activities, practice strategies for effective and time-saving study-skills, and role-play scenarios for first-year situations like communicating with your professors. By the end of this 1-credit hour course, you will have a well-prepared and versatile roadmap to guide your first-year journey at FSU.

Freshman Seminar in Critical Thinking and Information Literacy - IDS1107

This course will cover a variety of topics related to critical thinking including evaluating research and scholarly literature, artificial intelligence applications in higher education, scholarly/scientific communication, and spotting fake news/information. This course will be entirely class-discussion and group activity based. While there will be no homework or assignments to hand in, students must be prepared to be focused and engaged on each week’s topic as a requirement to pass the course. This engagement program specializes in working with first year college students to promote retention and academic success in the freshmen year and beyond.

 Freshman Interest Group (FIG) - FIG Tab on Schedule Assistant

FIG enrollment is CLOSED for Fall 2024. 

Freshman Interest Groups provide a way for new students to connect with a group of students sharing similar interests. And will place you and your classmates in a set of classes that have a theme such as business or communication. A FIG is a cluster of high demand first-year courses grouped by major or an academic theme. Each cluster is grouped with a distinct FIG Colloquium class (HUM1920).

Inquiry Approaches to Teaching - SMT1043

Understand the Past, Live in the Present, Shape the Future – IDS1107

The aims of this course are for you to meet students with similar interests, explore the resources that FSU has to offer, equip yourself for success in your major, and discover the many career possibilities available to History majors. The High School AA Florida State Experience - IDS1107

This course is designed exclusively for first-semester students who earned an Associate of Arts (AA) degree while in high school. Get to Nole Nursing - NUR1010

This course is designed specifically for first or second semester students who have declared Nursing, NFA as their major. The class meets once a week and centers around the nursing profession and the admission requirements needed to enter the College of Nursing at FSU. Weekly guest speakers include members of the nursing faculty, nursing advisors, nurse leaders from the community and successful Nole Nurse Alumni who are working in the profession. Community involvement is also a key component of this course as we will be volunteering together as a group in at least one community program during the semester.

 Library Introduction for Earth Science- IDS1107

The purpose of this course is to allow students majoring in an Earth sciences discipline to start creating a community of fellow students within the EOAS department. In this course we will explore resources available to you as an FSU student, develop critical thinking skills, and examine hot topics in the field of research. An additional element of this class is that students are going to help design the course by choosing topics to focus for a given week’s class period. This “choose your own adventure” is meant to give power to the students in allowing them to pick topics they are interested in learning or discussing. As a result this will be a highly interactive class with lots of discussion, student demonstrations, and group activities. This engagement program specializes in working with first year college students to promote retention and academic success in the freshmen year and beyond. Future Innovators - IDS1107

The Future Innovators section of the Florida State Experience specializes in working with first-time in college students to promote academic success in your freshman year and beyond. This section will specifically introduce you to programs, services and resources here at FSU to assist you in engaging in innovative research, events and entrepreneurship. In addition, within this section you will plot a course of action (Game Plan) to take advantage of these resources throughout your time here at Florida State University. The resources and programs you will engage with will educate you about activities during and beyond your first semester. The meeting schedule will represent a wide range of potential student interests from technology-based activities to international programs. In the first week of the course, you will complete a questionnaire so that there will be a better understanding of your interests in research and general innovation. This will help to tailor the semester activities to the needs and interests of the class.

Future Innovators X:

The Future Innovators X section will focus on skill development and technological exploration. Throughout the semester, students will dive into the dynamic world of innovative technologies, including 3D printing, immersive media, and app development. You will engage in hands-on learning experiences aimed at introducing these cutting-edge tools and techniques. You will be introduced to impactful individuals, programs, and resources within FSU's vibrant ecosystem, all geared towards igniting your passion for innovation and problem solving. We will explore a diverse range of student interests, from coding and prototyping to launching your own entrepreneurial ventures. This introductory course is designed for creative minds who are passionate about storytelling, game mechanics, and collaborative world-building. No prior experience is necessary, and all levels of experience are welcomed. In this dynamic and interactive class, students will be assigned small groups and embark on a journey to conceptualize, develop, and bring to life their own unique TTRPG as it relates to their experiences here at FSU. The course aims to provide a comprehensive albeit introductory understanding of the key elements that contribute to a successful TTRPG experience.  Working with Others One-on-One IDS1107

This course is designed to help students build their skills in working one-on-one with others in a variety of contexts, providing them with experience that will aid them in virtually any major or career path. Students will learn effective strategies for helping others (and themselves) learn, working through conflict and disagreement, aiding people in different stages of distress, working with clients, supervising others as a teacher or employer, and collaborating with others. Students will develop their emotional intelligence, ability to handle conflicts, customer service aptitude, and other essential skills for improving their educational and career capabilities. Students in this class can expect to attend class once weekly, use Canvas to access course materials, and be ready to participate in classroom activities and have open discussion about each week's topic. A final project and presentation that connects your own goals with the concepts of the class and identifies relevant campus resources and activities will be due at the end of the semester.

 Designing Your Life with Innovation - ENT1611

This course helps you figure out who you are, who you want to be, and where you want to go. It teaches you to use the Design Thinking process to actively create the life you want based on your interests, strengths, characteristics, values. This course also explores your purpose in college, selecting your major, educational wayfinding, innovating Florida State experiences, developing an entrepreneurial mindset, and creating your preliminary post-graduation plan. This hands-on class utilizes small group discussions, personal and group reflections, in-class activities, field experiences, and design team collaboration. It could also lead to supportive friendships and mentoring support.
