Steps for Designing Your Engage 100 Opportunity

GETTING APPROVED

Step 1: Identify which type of Engage 100 you’d like to propose

  • Have an existing 0- or 1- credit hour class recognized as Engage 100
    1. The optimum student to teacher ratio is 19:1
    2. Ensure there is Peer Mentor component
    3. Must be directed toward newly entering undergraduate students
    4. The course must address at least three of the five Engage 100 student learning objectives.
  • Have an existing program recognized as an Engage 100 experience
    1. Design a section of IDS1107: The Florida State Experience
    2. Upon approval, courses can be built by the department or by Undergraduate Studies
    3. Syllabus for the section(s) you are teaching must align with the sample syllabus for IDS1107 but is tailored to your specific topic/program
    4. The optimum student to teacher ratio is 19:1
    5. Ensure there is Peer Mentor component
    6. Must be directed toward newly entering undergraduate students
    7. The course must address at least three of the five Engage 100 student learning objectives.
  • Offer a First-Year Seminar for the new first-year cohort in your program
    1. Minimum of 10 contact hours during one semester
    2. Initial meeting must take place by week 6 of the semester
    3. Faculty/staff led activities should be focused on academic engagement
    4. Ensure there is Peer Mentor component
    5. The optimum ratio is 19:1; however, all prospective Engage 100 activities will go through a review/approval process so larger groups may be approved.
    6. Must be directed toward newly entering undergraduate students
    7. The course must address at least three of the five Engage 100 student learning objectives.

Step 2: Shape Your Opportunity

  • Define your learning objectives
    1. Identify at least three of the five Engage 100 student learning objectives you would like to focus on in your experience
    2. Program-specific outcomes should incorporate academic and co-curricular engagement beyond current term
  • Identify your student population and size
    1. The optimum ratio is 19:1 (students to mentor)
    2. Population – who is your target audience?
      1. Compulsory – enrollment is required to be in your program
      2. Recruited – students must apply or be accepted in some way
      3. Open-access – any student can join
    3. Identify your target group
    4. Plan recruitment strategies
    5. Consider a stand-alone website or social media options
    6. Discuss recruitment assistance available through the Engage 100 program staff
  • Designate your faculty/staff liaison
    1. Select faculty/staff liaison
    2. Identify instructor(s) of record
  • Select and train your peer mentors
    1. Any office using peer support must provide the student a formalized training that demonstrates measurable outcomes
      1. Develop training course or
      2. Utilize PAALM modules
    2. Engage 100 can provide stipends at various levels for peer mentors.
    3. Peer led activities must have faculty/staff oversight (beyond the “signature/signing” involvement that can occur with a Recognized Student Organization). Classroom observations are encouraged and are required if using undergraduate TAs to facilitate course sections.

Step 3: Submit Your Course/Experience for Engage 100 Approval

  • Use the Engage 100 portal to submit your application.
  • For the best chance of approval in time for promotion during Orientation, new program applications should be submitted by January 30 for implementation the next fall term.

REQUIRED STEPS BEFORE EACH SEMSTER

Step 4: Select & Train your Peer Mentors

  • Mandatory training must cover FERPA, Title IV, and academic honor policy.
  • To use the online PAALM training modules, please contact Danielle Porter at danielle.lewis@fsu.edu
  • To use your own training, please submit a copy of your training agenda/schedule to Danielle Porter at danielle.lewis@fsu.edu

Step 5: Submit the Course Build Request

  • If you are using IDS1107 or need help building your course sections, submit the course build request for all sections to Danielle Porter at danielle.lewis@fsu.edu. NOTE: Due dates below.
    1. Summer B and Fall course requests are due in March 1.
    2. Spring course requests are due in October 1.
    3. Please have your time and location selected for each section.
    4. Identify the primary Instructor of Record for each section. IORs must have at least a master’s degree.
  • Identify the classroom space you’d like to use
    1. Classroom space
      1. Use Classroom Management tool to reserve classroom space
    2. Non-academic space
      1. Obtain permission from appropriate source
      2. Or contact Academic Space and Scheduling to reserve space

Step 6: Submit the Mentor Funding Request

  • If you would like to compensate your peer mentors, funding is available. The funding amount for each mentor is based on the level of work required in their role.
  • Each Engage 100 experience is responsible for hiring and adhering to HR processes and requirements.
  • Submit the mentor funding request to Danielle Porter at danielle.lewis@fsu.edu before the start of each term.
