Living Learning Community (LLC)

If you are accepted into an Living-Learning Community (LLC), where students with a shared interest live in the same residence hall, you will also take a few classes together and find friends and mentors for life. Some LLCs are designed for students in any major; others are limited by major or career field. Each LLC has a required colloquium course which meets the Engage 100 requirement too. To learn more, visit llc.fsu.edu. Each LLC requires enrollment in a colloquium course, so course codes vary. See the LLC appendix in "It's All Academic".

Introduction to Academic Exploration - SLS1203

Students will explore the three fundamental components of Florida State University’s Exploratory program: Self Exploration, Major Exploration, and Career Exploration as they research majors and ask questions to provoke reflection and goal setting that ultimately results in selecting a major confidently. This course is only available to Exploratory majors.

Intro to Food and Nutrition Science - IDS1107

This course requires students to identify an appropriate (approved) Experiential/Laboratory Learning venue to shadow, volunteer, or visit as part of the course requirement to engage and experience the real world of healthcare settings or health-related research laboratories. This seminar facilitates student engagement in experiential learning, promotes thoughtful reflection on academic and pre-professional experiences, and stimulates discussion of various career options.

 Exploring Health Professions (IMS) - IHS1100

The Exploring Health Professions seminar will inform students on healthcare and the health professions, knowledge of the various roles of the healthcare team, the resources to help students explore their career interests and goals and informs students on health professional graduate programs.  Success in STEM - IDS1107 

This section of The Florida State Experience course is geared towards incoming students in a declared STEM major (Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Math, Physics, etc.) The course is designed to help set up STEM students for success by developing effective study skills, understanding challenges that exist for STEM majors, and by beginning to utilize campus resources available at FSU. Students will utilize Canvas to access materials and will have weekly discussions about being a STEM major and its alignment with weekly course topics.

Inquiry Approaches to Teaching - SMT1043

Students teach science or math lessons in elementary classrooms to obtain firsthand experience with planning and implementing inquiry-based curriculum. Students, working alone or in pairs, teach two hands-on science or mathematics lessons in a local elementary school.

Get to Nole Nursing - NUR1010

This course is designed specifically for first or second semester students who have declared Nursing, NFA as their major. The class meets once a week and centers around the nursing profession and the admission requirements needed to enter the College of Nursing at FSU. Weekly guest speakers include members of the nursing faculty, nursing advisors, nurse leaders from the community and successful Nole Nurse Alumni who are working in the profession. Community involvement is also a key component of this course as we will be volunteering together as a group in at least one community program during the semester.

Chart Your Course - SLS2206 

This course invites first-year students to experience the many opportunities Florida State University has to offer and chart their own course to a successful college experience. Students will explore their own identities and values, engage with campus resources, and apply college success strategies to effectively navigate their transition to FSU. Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Describe the unique history, traditions, and values of Florida State University.
  • Identify appropriate campus resources and involvement opportunities to aid in their transition to college.

First-Year Connections and Success - IDS1000 

Students participating in this course will learn about how to take advantage of the many academic engagement and support services FSU offers through in-class and out-of-classroom learning experiences. They will explore their own purpose, learn about themselves, and create plans to make the most of their time in college. Future Innovators - IDS1107

The Future Innovators section of the Florida State Experience specializes in working with first-time in college students to promote academic success in your freshman year and beyond. This section will specifically introduce you to programs, services and resources here at FSU to assist you in engaging in innovative research, events and entrepreneurship. In addition, within this section you will plot a course of action (Game Plan) to take advantage of these resources throughout your time here at Florida State University. The resources and programs you will engage with will educate you about activities during and beyond your first semester. The meeting schedule will represent a wide range of potential student interests from technology-based activities to international programs. In the first week of the course, you will complete a questionnaire so that there will be a better understanding of your interests in research and general innovation. This will help to tailor the semester activities to the needs and interests of the class.

Future Innovators X:

The Future Innovators X section will focus on skill development and technological exploration. Throughout the semester, students will dive into the dynamic world of innovative technologies, including 3D printing, immersive media, and app development. You will engage in hands-on learning experiences aimed at introducing these cutting-edge tools and techniques. You will be introduced to impactful individuals, programs, and resources within FSU's vibrant ecosystem, all geared towards igniting your passion for innovation and problem solving. We will explore a diverse range of student interests, from coding and prototyping to launching your own entrepreneurial ventures. Each class session will be a dynamic blend of interactive workshops, guest visitors, and hands-on experiences, providing you with ample opportunities to experiment, create, and innovate. Are you interested in finding other like-minded students on campus? Welcome to "Tabletop Roleplaying Game Design: Crafting Worlds and Narratives," an immersive and hands-on course that invites you to delve into the captivating realm of TTRPG design! 

This introductory course is designed for creative minds who are passionate about storytelling, game mechanics, and collaborative world-building. No prior experience is necessary, and all levels of experience are welcomed. In this dynamic and interactive class, students will be assigned small groups and embark on a journey to conceptualize, develop, and bring to life their own unique TTRPG as it relates to their experiences here at FSU. The course aims to provide a comprehensive albeit introductory understanding of the key elements that contribute to a successful TTRPG experience. Additionally, students will explore opportunities to interact with like-minded individuals within the FSU community and connect their love of gaming to their educational and professional goals.
